:General:

Genres:

Fantasy: First and foremost, we're big fans of comic fantasy (hail the great deities of PratchettFriesnerHolt), urban fantasy (De Lint, we're looking at you...), contemporary fantasy, adventure stories, fantasy thrillers, supernatural crime, alternate fables (Windling!Datlow!)... things with plenty of action that rattle along...
Anything moody, slow or fluffy will be wasted on us.

Horror: Contemporary please.  (Hello Mr King!)
Traditional atmospheric supernatural stories will also be completely wasted on us.  I know.  I'm a heathen.  :->

SF: fun, weird, plenty of action.

NO POETRY!  Thanks!

If in any doubt, bounce around the website - especially the blog and links pages.   Of course, you could always buy a copy of the magazine!

Reading Period: For fiction submissions we're implementing a reading period lasting from December to May (see fiction section below.)  However, we're open to faction & art submissions all year!

Submitting: We're now accepting email submissions!  Put email subject as 'H&N Submission'.  For short pieces, paste into body of email, for longer pieces attach as Word/RTF document.

Please state name, story title and word count in email.

Alternatively, send disposable hardcopy to the address on the left along with either SAE or email address for reply.  (We prefer emails if poss.)  Please mention if the piece is available in electronic copy.  If you're a non-UK person, please say if you have Paypal that can accept credit cards for payment purposes.

No multiple submissions.  Currently, no reprints, thanks.

Response Times: When we're good, we're good; when we're bad, we're monumentally lousy.  Realistically estimate about 3 - 6 months at the moment.  But if you haven't had a response after 2 months (we're always *trying* for better service... ), send an 'H&N Kick' email to check that we've got your submission.

Slush Blog: If you haven't heard about your submission, please see the Slush Blog for basic status details.

:Fiction:

See the genre blurb at the top for what we're looking for.

We're currently closed to fiction submissions.

Make it between 500 and 6000 words, standard ms format.  If you fancy sending along a multi-part piece of fiction, bung us a short synopsis and the first part.   In general, the shorter the piece, the better chance you have.

Reading Period - we're only accepting fiction submissions between December and May - this is to ensure that everyone gets a response within a reasonable time (and so that the editor's head doesn't explode....)  Anything received in June-November will be sent straight back!

:Faction:

We want features that cover the genres mentioned way up at the top, be they articles or interviews, one offs or series ideas, serious analysis, soap-box style, piss-takes, event reports or whatever...surprise us!

Currently we don't do reviews but if you've read/watched something and can find a good angle to talk about it from, give it a go.  For examples check out the extracts featured in the Issue Information pages.

If you're willing to do interviews by commission, please let us know.  Likewise, if you're willing to knock out an article by commission.

500-2000 words long, standard ms format.  If providing own illustrations, please state clearly image sources for copyright purposes.

:Artwork:

We need black & white/greyscale/digital/photographic etc. art for internal & cover illos.

We tend to leave commissions 'til the last minute so please state what your average turnaround time is.

Email over your web addy so we can see what you're about - if you decide to email over a sample please keep it small as we're only on snail-like dial-up.
